WORD OF THE WEEK – WEEK OF MAY 18TH
The Kenter Canyon Library had a "Word of the Week" this year.   When students would go to the library, Ms. Sarah would give them the word for the week and challenge the students to use it in different ways.   Some parents and teachers have asked that we keep the Work of the Week going. Here's this week's WORD OF THE WEEK.

HELP FEED THE FRONTLINE FIGHTING COVID-19 LA
HELP FEED THE FRONTLINE started as a grass roots effort with Kenter Canyon moms:  Erin Arend, Shannon Pruitt, Sarah Harden, Nora Skinner, Alison Kuperberg and a dad from Crossroads, Jeff Berman.  Their collective goal was to help feed the frontline hospital workers as well as help independent restaurants remain operational in Los Angeles.  These parents partnered w/ World Central Kitchen as the 501c3 and Brooke Williamson of Playa Provisions (who incidentally just won Tournament of Champions on Food Network)… and it's taken on a life of its own.  The community has rallied, and they’ve had some significant contributions ($100k from Bill Simmons and a $250k match from Anthony Davis).  They’ve raised ~$640k to date, with a couple more sizable donations coming in a few days.   Thanks to this incredible community funding, Helping Feed Frontline are now able to provide 14k meals weekly to 13 hospitals and 2 fire stations in Los Angeles.  Moreover, all these meals are coming from local restaurants ---all of whom are fighting to keep the lights on.  It’s small in the scheme of this massive global pandemic, but it feels good to galvanize our community and to help those on the frontline while buoying our local independent restaurants.   Many of the chefs are delivering the meals themselves and experiencing firsthand the emotionally charged reactions from our healthcare heroes who are deep in the trenches.  Meanwhile, many of our chefs are well known, especially to our Food Network community – and yet, despite their celebrity status, many are struggling to remain operational and all are rising to the occasion and grateful to participate.  The stories of the frontline workers as well as those fighting to keep their local kitchens and staffs operational, is both inspiring and heartbreaking.  We're all highly sensitive to the economic rip tide that this Pandemic has created.  We know there are others in our community and beyond who are asking how they can help. Having lived through the fires, less than a year ago, Kenter Canyon students have a great deal of respect for our first responders.  Each one of children from these grassroots organizers have opted to participate by pulling money out of their piggy banks to help feed the frontline. Welcome to Kenter Canyon!
A message from Dr. Terry L. Moren, Principal

Kenter Canyon School is delighted to have you join our community and become an integral part of your child’s education.  Kenter Canyon offers a unique experience to its students because of the collaboration  between its dedicated staff and the incredible involvement of its parents.  The parent is the child’s first teacher and plays an integral part of their child’s learning process.  I believe we must work together to ensure a safe and positive learning environment that teaches children how to be safe, respectful, and responsible citizens, as well as thinkers, discoverers, and inquirers. Together, we will continue to make a difference in the lives of the children at Kenter.  I hope that you will become involved in your child’s classroom as well as the parent involvement opportunities afforded through our Parent Support Group (PSG), Governance Council, School Site Council, and school activities.  We need volunteers to help with classroom activities, school-wide functions, traffic safety, special projects, enrichment activities, field trip supervision and committee work.  Look for periodical announcements inviting you to TwT “Tea with Terry” socials----“TwT is an opportunity to join me for an informal chat about Kenter Canyon.  Together, we will make a positive difference in the lives of children. We need parents to help us be involved in solutions, not just reporting problems.  Together, we can make ordinary things extraordinary. (more…)
