The Kenter Canyon Elementary School Instrumental Music Program by Children’s Music Workshop has been serving Kenter Canyon students since 1994. In that time, hundreds of children have been introduced to flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, violin, cello and recorder in this award winning program.
The instrumental music program is open to all students in grades one through five. Students may participate regardless of financial considerations. Instruction is provided during the regular school day as a part of a well-rounded and enriching curriculum.
Kenter Canyon music students compete each year in the LAUSD music scholarship auditions at LA Valley College. Over the past twelve years, Kenter Canyon students have won more of the merit based music scholarships than any other school in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Kenter Canyon music students are represented in large numbers each May in the All Schools Elementary Honor Orchestra at UCLA. The highly acclaimed performance is broadcast each year on several Los Angeles television stations. The past two years, the show has received Los Angeles area Emmy awards for Outstanding Achievement in Children/Youth Programming. (See www.emmys.tv)
Communication is a hallmark of the Kenter Canyon Orchestra program. An online calendar, monthly music updates, a clearly defined instructional schedule, custom and sequential lessons, regular homework and progress reports and the prompt return of parent phone calls and emails all contribute to students’ success.
